Interview with Robin Knox-Johnston - Round the World Sailor

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, CBE was the first man to perform a singlehanded non-stop circumnavigation of the Earth and was the second winner of the Jules Verne Trophy. A sailing idol to many and mentor to a fortunate few, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, 68, instantly forms the focal point when a group of offshore yachtsman gather: his enormous breadth of experience, inexhaustible repertoire of sailing anecdotes and rolling, throaty laugh are a hypnotic combination.

Is sailing around the world easier today or back when you were just 29?
Its easier because we know it is now possible; we did not know that in 1969! Communications are much better, you no longer need to be able to use a sextant as you have up to the second positions every 3 secs, and there is an abundance of safety equipment, which did not exist in pre satellite days.

Has your outlook on life changed?
Not that much. I am more patient now than I was as a younger man and tend to be calmer when things go wrong, but in part that is due to experience. If something has gone wrong before then you have a better idea of how to deal with it next time, something the youth culture does not understand.

Over 50 and Travelling Abroad?

Are you over 50 and planning a trip? Whatever your age, it is worth planning any journeys in the UK or abroad thoroughly. Here are a few extra things to think about before you go away.

Are you on any medication? Be sure you have enough for the whole journey, including all your travel time i.e. Flights. Ask your doctor before you go if you need any extra amounts to cover you for the whole period of time you are away. Check in advance for any laws against taking certain medications into certain countries. It is a good idea to obtain a doctors note just in case.

Do you have any particular health requirements, or are you diagnosed with an illness? If so it is advisable to consult your doctor before taking any long journeys, especially flights. If you have an on-going condition you may need a doctors consent to travel. Consult your insurance company or travel advisor for advice. Don’t forget to visit your doctor or nurse before going away to make sure your vaccinations are all up to date – you made need boosters.

Are you laughing yet?

If you are over 50 then you deserve a little more respect from financial services organisations for good reason. The over 45’s own 80% of the country’s wealth and the over 50’s have a 30% higher disposable income than those under 50.
The older population has the same car or home insurance requirement as the rest of the population or indeed any other financial product and as mature decision makers who are on the whole more responsible they are a valuable segment of the UK population.
The U.K.’s over 50 population is worth a combined £175 billion, with this in mind remember your consumer value to the industry and keep well informed.
